A slate table comes apart into a frame, a bed in sections and a set of rails, and in this valley those pieces are not going down a basement stair, because there is almost never a basement to go down. Everything sits on a slab. So the game room is a converted garage on the ground floor, or a loft at the top of the stairs in a newer two storey house, and those two destinations make for completely different visits.

The garage is the easy carry and the harder room. A slab is a steady floor, but it is poured with a fall toward the door so that water runs out, which means the table is going onto a surface that is deliberately not level. That is fine and it is normal, and it is why the shimming takes as long as it does.

The loft is the opposite. The room is flat and the stair is the problem: one flight, often with a turn at a half-landing, and a rail on the open side that decides how wide the passage really is. A three piece bed manages it. A one piece slate usually will not.
